Penny Dreadful will be back on US screens to send spring out with a scare.

Showtime set a May 1 return date for the fantasy horror series at the TCA press tour today (January 12).

Patti LuPone – who played the mysterious therapist Dr. Seward in season one and a witch last year – is on board for the new episodes in an entirely different role as series regular.

Penny Dreadful converges popular characters from gothic literature in Victorian England as cataclysmic events unfold.

Eva Green is fresh off a nomination for Best Actress - Drama at the Golden Globes last week – although the prize went to Taraji P. Henson of Empire.

Newcomers joining the Penny Dreadful cast this season will be Christian Camargo (Dexter), Jessica Barden (The Outcast) and Samuel Barnett (Twenty Twelve).

Spooks veteran Shazad Latif has also signed on for the series to play Robert Louis Stevenson's mad scientist Dr. Henry Jekyll.
