Grey's Anatomy star Scott Speedman is poised to play the lead role in another ABC drama.

Speedman, who plays Dr Nick Marsh and Meredith's love interest on Grey's, is set to lead the pilot for detective series RJ Decker (via Deadline).

The series is an adaptation of 1987 novel Double Whammy by Carl Hiaasen and is created by Elementary's Rob Doherty.

Speedman is to play the titular RJ Decker, a disgraced newspaper photographer and ex-con who has a fresh start as a private investigator in South Florida.

Described as short-fused but charming, RJ will be working on a range of bizarre cases with the help of his journalist ex, her police detective wife and a shadowy new benefactor — a woman from his past who could make him or break him, gifting a one-way ticket back to prison.

Fans of Speedman's character in Grey's should rest easy as the star's involvement in RJ Decker doesn't mean he will no longer appear in the long-running medical drama.

Nick is expected to return in the upcoming season 22 of Grey's Anatomy as he and Meredith are still together.

While Nick's future on the show hasn't been confirmed just yet, Ellen Pompeo previously revealed Meredith isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Speaking with El País in April, Pompeo was adamant she wouldn't leave the series as it would "make no sense".

"That would make no sense, emotionally or financially," she said, pointing out the show "was streamed more than a billion times in 2024".

"If I were to walk away completely, everybody gets to make money from my hard work for 20 years and I wouldn’t make any money," she continued.

"To me, it doesn’t make any sense that everybody [else] gets to profit off of my hard work. And emotionally, the show means a lot to people. I want to have an attitude of gratitude toward the show."

Grey's Anatomy season 21 airs on Thursdays at 10pm ET on ABC in the US. Previous seasons are streaming on Disney+ in the UK.
