With the fourth season of Outer Banks currently playing out on Netflix – the second batch of episodes have just been released – fans have been waiting eagerly for news of whether or not a season five will eventually be on the way.
Apparently the streaming platform didn't want to keep us waiting for too long, as earlier this week it was confirmed that Outer Banks season five has indeed got the green light!
The exciting news was shared in a letter to the fans, addressed "to all Pogues", direct from the show's creators (via Tudum).
"We imagined a mystery that would lead to a five-season journey of adventure, treasure hunting and friendship," the letter went on to read.
"At the time seven years ago, it seemed impossible that we would really get to tell the whole five-season story, but here we are, at the end of our fourth season, still chopping away."
"The fourth season was our longest and hardest – but most rewarding – to produce," it continued.

The letter concluded that with "sadness but also excitement" that they would now be turning their attention to season five – which would also act as the last of the series.
"We think it will be our best yet," and it was signed off: Josh [Pate], Jonas [Pate] and Shannon [Burke].
When is the release date for Outer Banks season 5?
Of course it's way too soon for us to have this news for you, even though we do know for sure that it's coming.
It's tricky to make an educated guess based on previous years, as each season has been added to Netflix at different points of the year.
Season four arrived across October and November, while the third season came out in February 2023.
We think it's most likely to be 2026 at least, before Outer Banks' final season is ready to be shared with the world – but watch this space for news and updates.
What will happen in Outer Banks season 5?
The season five confirmation letter noted that its final instalment hopes to "bring our beloved Pogues home in the way we imagined and planned", as it was revealed that Outer Banks always had a five-year story in mind.
The fourth season has ended with what the creators have described as their "best, most powerful episode" – which also happens to be a feature-length – so the scene is being set for an epic final outing for the Outer Banks fans.

As of time of writing, the latest trailer to be released was for the second part of season four.
