The actor, who has played Dr Teddy Altman since 2009, recently directed an episode of season 19. Reflecting on her experience, Raver explained how working on Shonda Rhimes' show differed from other sets.

"I came up in the business where there were just... there [were] a lot of men, which is great — love all of you," she said at the D23 fan event, adding that she "didn't get to see a lot of women doing a lot of the jobs."

Speaking about how she landed the gig, Raver revealed that she was persistent. Her hard work eventually paid off and she was allowed to shadow Grey's Anatomy actress, director and executive producer Debbie Allen.

"It was like training for the Russian ballet," Raver explained. "It was like... you are to shadow, which is to be here but not be seen and not get in the way."

She added: "I just really had the time of my life and I really loved it and I felt really well-prepared and so incredibly supported."

Grey's Anatomy season 21 will air premiere on Thursday, September 26 at 10pm ET on ABC in the US. Previous seasons are streaming on Disney+ in the UK.
