The Boys' season-four finale has just been unleashed on the world – along with a warning message from Prime Video. But is there going to be a season five of The Boys?
It had already been revealed that a fifth instalment had been greenlit, so fans can be rest assured that there will be new episodes to unpack.
But that news also came with a Homelander-worthy blow, as it was confirmed at the same time that season five was to be the show's ultimate climax. Yes, sorry to be the bearers of bad news, but The Boys season five will be where the series officially ends.
Here's everything you need to know about the final season of The Boys.
Will there be a season 5 of The Boys?
As mentioned above, the Prime Video show will indeed be getting a fifth season – and it will also be the last of the series.
Show creator Eric Kripke clarified that "we knew that it was going to be a five-season story for years now", despite the Amazon streaming service trying its best to "lovingly" convince him to extend it.
What to Read Next
"I mean, probably since writing the beginning of season three, we knew, and so we were already laying down track that was always heading in this direction," he told TVLine. "Honestly, they've been great about letting us end it on our own terms. I'm really grateful."
When will The Boys season 5 be released?
Naturally, it's way too soon to have an exact release date for the final season of The Boys.
In more recent seasons, there's been a two-year gap between releases. This tracks with recent comments from show boss Eric Kripke, who told Variety that filming for season five was estimated to be starting in November 2024 and would likely go into mid-2025.
"It's not totally locked in yet but we are going to start shooting around mid-November," he told the publication. "And I don't know when it'll premiere yet, but we'll be shooting well into middle of '25."
With that in mind, we probably wouldn't expect a season-five premiere until some time in 2026.
How many episodes will The Boys season 5 have?
Prime Video's hit show usually has eight episodes a season, and Kripke has confirmed (also via Variety) that this will again be the case for season five.
As to the lengths of those episodes, we'll just have to wait and see.
Warning: spoilers for The Boys – including the final episode of season four – follow from this point on.
Who will be in The Boys season 5 cast?
It's safe to assume that Claudia Domit – who plays the side-switching, head-popping supe Victoria Neuman – won't be back, following her gruesome death at the hands of Butcher.
Walking Dead star Jeffrey Dean Morgan might be returning, given that he plays the devil on Butcher's shoulder – and there's no angel on the other one right now.
While cast announcements for season five haven't been officially made just yet, we'd fully expect our main gang to be back for the final run of The Boys. This would include:
- Jack Quaid as Hughie Campbell
- Erin Moriarty as Starlight/Annie
- Karen Fukuhara as Kimiko
- Tomer Capone as Frenchie
- Karl Urban as Billy Butcher
- Laz Alonso as Mother's Milk
- Antony Starr as Homelander
- Chace Crawford as The Deep
- Jessie T Usher as A-Train
- Nathan Mitchell as Black Noir
- Susan Heyward as Sister Sage
There has also been talk of guest stars and cameos for the show's final season, with Kripke teasing:
"We're kicking around some ideas. We have this wonderful list of A-list fans who have told us over the years that they would love to do the show, so we're going to take a long look at that list and see who makes sense."
Eric Kripke has also previously expressed a desire to bring Jared Padalecki, who he worked with on Supernatural, on board for the final season. Padalecki told Deadline:
"We have talked [about a role]. As a matter of fact, we talked today... I think at this point in my acting life, I only want to work on projects that I really care about or with people that I really care about, and obviously Eric and I are indelibly connected forever."
Will The Boys be getting more spinoffs?
Prime Video's spin-off series, Gen V, already has a second season on the way and it's currently understood to be filming.
There is also a Mexico spinoff in the works, but Kripke has teased "a couple other things we have in development" in the wake of the news that season five would be the last for the main show.
"But we're not ready to announce anything yet," he concluded.
The Boys seasons 1 – 4 are available to watch on Prime Video now.
