In the episode airing last week (September 25) in the US, Dr Lance Sweets - played by John Francis Daley - died while helping with the investigation into the FBI conspiracy.

Daley told TVLine that his departure came after he requested to take four months off in order to direct the remake of National Lampoon's Vacation.

"I knew it would be tough, because I was asking for four months off," he said. "And I was so happy that they were able to accommodate that.

"[But] I had spoken to Stephen Nathan about it all, and he said it would be more satisfying for the fans to conclude Sweets in a dramatic way, rather than for it to be up in the air and have him come back midway through the season."

Daley added that Sweets's death affected him on an emotional level, admitting that he cried after shooting his final scene.

He said: "I had a strong bond with Sweets. I really did feel like I was losing a part of me. I had so much compassion for him. He was such a good person.

"He had gone through so much, and to see him die in such a grim way was shocking."

Bones continues on Fox on Thursdays in the US.
