David Boreanaz will be trading in his FBI badge for a navy uniform now that Bones is ending.
A week ahead of his long-running Fox procedural's series finale, Deadline reports that Boreanaz has signed up to star in a CBS pilot about the secretive Navy SEALS.
Boreanaz is replacing Person of Interest's Jim Caviezel as the pilot's lead character Jason because of Caviezel's apparent creative differences with CBS TV Studios.
The pilot dramatises the top-secret and dangerous missions taken on by the SEALs to protect US interests around the world. Boreanaz's character Jason is the SEAL assault team's battle-weary leader.
CBS has lined up an impressive supporting cast to fill out the squad, including Mad Men's Jessica Paré, Bates Motel star Max Thieriot and Grimm actress Toni Trucks.
The project comes from writer Benjamin Cavell, who has previously worked on geopolitical thriller Homeland, Justified and Amazon's new hit Sneaky Pete.
What to Read Next
If this pilot is picked up by CBS, it will presumably mean that David Boreanaz will be back on TV with a major new role only months after ending work on his long-running hit Bones.
It shouldn't come as much of a surprise that he's snapped up another job so quickly, since Boreanaz recently said that he'd never do a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reunion because he's always focused on the future rather than the past.
"I have no problem with the cult audience, and I would totally get back into the genre, but I'm not a big reunion guy," he insisted.
"I tend to like to go forward. I don't like to go backward - except when I've got ice skates on my feet and I'm playing hockey."
We'll have to settle for this new Navy SEALs show - if it gets a pick-up from CBS this spring.
