Lost changed the face of US television forever when it launched in the fall of 2004 - ten years, six seasons and 121 episodes later, which of our visits to that mysterious island do we remember most fondly?

10. 'Exposé' - Season 3, Episode 14
Season 3 inductees Nikki (Kiele Sanchez) and Paulo (Rodrigo Santoro) were about as popular as Driveshaft's second album. Something had to be done and Lost sent the pair off in magnificent style with 'Exposé' - a hugely entertaining bit of fan service with one of the most chilling endings to any episode ever, as the comatose couple are buried alive.

9. 'The Man Behind the Curtain' - Season 3, Episode 20
Michael Emerson was nominated for an Emmy for this, the first Ben-centric episode. 'The Man Behind the Curtain' is a key arc instalment, exploring not only Ben's past but also the history of the island - Jacob, the DHARMA Initiative - and lays the groundwork for a very different fourth season.

8. 'The Shape of Things to Come' - Season 4, Episode 9
'The Shape of Things to Come' is Ben Linus's darkest hour - as the leader of the Others sees his daughter slain - but it's one of Lost's very strongest offerings. The first episode to air following the 2007 Writers Guild of America strike, this was Lost rested and re-energised, delivering thrills, shocks and mammoth twists (why is Ben in the Sahara desert??) - unsurprisingly, it earned Emerson his second Emmy nomination.

7. 'Deus Ex Machina' - Season 1, Episode 19
Later on, Lost would become renowned for its willingness to off major characters, but the first time it happened - with poor Boone (Ian Somerhalder) sustaining fatal injuries in an attempt to reach the outside world - it was a real stunner. 'Deus Ex Machina' also boasts one of the series' most memorable endings, as a bruised and broken Locke has his faith restored as the inside of the hatch illuminates. Magical stuff.

6. 'There's No Place Like Home' - Season 4, Episodes 12, 13 & 15
If there's one thing Lost knew how to do well, it was a season finale and the three-part climax to Season 4 pulled out all the stops, with jaw-dropping moments aplenty - Michael's death, Desmond's reunion with Penny, Sawyer leaping from the helicopter, Locke's corpse in that coffin - and another of the show's gamechanging moments as Ben moves heaven and (quite literally) earth, shifting the island to a new location.

5. 'Exodus' - Season 1, Episodes 23, 24 & 25
Paying off the many and various threads sewn by the first season of Lost while also dropping tantalising teasers for season two would've been no easy task, but 'Exodus' delivers. From the first full-blown appearance of The Smoke Monster, to Jack and Sawyer's bonding moment over Christian, to the joy of watching Michael's raft finally set sail to the horror of Walt's kidnap, this three-parter is an emotional rollercoaster.

4. 'Pilot' - Season 1, Episodes 1 & 2
The best pilot episode ever made? The Lost series premiere is unquestionably one of the most iconic pieces of television ever made - and one of the most epic, with an estimated cost of between $10-14 million. A record-breaking 18.6m viewers tuned in for the first part of the pilot, with JJ Abrams going on to win an Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series.

3. 'Walkabout' - Season 1, Episode 4
Coming off a knockout pilot, Lost struck gold again early in its first season with the first Locke-centric episode, 'Walkabout'. Terry O'Quinn's Man of Faith remained a brilliant enigma throughout the series' run, but here we got our first glimpse into his inner life, as we learn - in what remains one of the show's all-time great twists - that the pre-island Locke was paraplegic.

2. 'Through the Looking Glass' - Season 3, Episodes 22 and 23
Lost's finest finale, 'Through the Looking Glass' not only featured the heart-wrenching departure of a much-loved character - Charlie dying a hero by informing Desmond that it was "Not Penny's Boat" - but flipped the entire series on its head with that jaw-dropping final scene and the introduction of the flash-forwards.

1. 'The Constant' - Season 4, Episode 5
"I love you, Penny - I've always loved you..." The show's crowning achievement, 'The Constant' is part complex sci-fi mindbender and part heartfelt romance. Just try to hold back the tears as Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick) finally reconciles with his beloved - this was the episode which proved that, for all its fantastical notions, the heart of Lost was its characters, and their relationships.
