Nicole Richie has admitted that Fashion Star's mentors are trying not to be too competitive.

The Fashion Star mentor panel for the second season is comprised of Richie, Jessica Simpson and menswear designer John Varvatos.

In an interview with Parade, Richie disclosed that she and her fellow mentors really rely on each other for advice.

"It definitely can get competitive at times, but also there are times when we lean on each other for help. It's not us versus them," she explained.

Richie continued: "There are times when I go to John or I go to Jess and they'll come to me or they'll go to each other as well."

The socialite also reflected on what she learned from the first season of Fashion Star last year.

"For me, as a designer, when I show my collection to buyers, they just kind of like it or don't," Richie said. "They're not spending that amount of time on each piece like they do in this show."

She concluded: "So even though it's not my designs out there on the runway, it is nice to hear their feedback and to hear where they're coming from, hear what they're looking for, who their customer is, and that's something that I think all of us were really excited about."

Fashion Stars airs Fridays at 8/7c on NBC.
