Westworld actor James Marsden is hopeful that the sci-fi western series can be wrapped up sometime in the future.

After four seasons on HBO, the show was cancelled in early December, with the network's announcement reading: "Lisa [Joy] and Jonah [Nolan] have taken viewers on a mind-bending odyssey, raising the bar at every step. It's been a thrill to join them on this journey."

A month on from that heart-shattering news, Marsden – who plays Teddy Flood – spoke to Rolling Stone about the situation.

"I'd be lying to you if I told you that the way we ended Westworld wasn't a disappointment," he began. "I'm never going to speak without gratitude about any of my experiences, but it would have been nice to be able to complete the story we wanted to finish.

"I love this Westworld family. It was one of those unique opportunities to be part of something where I also would be sitting at home ravenously waiting for the next episode as a fan.

"I totally understand it's an expensive show and big shows have to have big audiences to merit the expense. I just wish it was about more than financial success."

Still, he's desperate for audiences to see the show and the story end on its own terms.

"Maybe there's some world where it can get completed somehow," Marsden noted. "Maybe that's just wishful thinking, because I know we had plans to finish it the way we wanted to."

This echoed co-showrunner Joy's comments from back in August, where she told The Wrap: "We had always planned on ending the series [with season 5].

"We always thought that Westworld should kind of come full circle and back to the West, but with Dolores, who was just a player in other people's games, finally getting to write her own.

"Just to close up a lot of the stuff that we've seen before like the flash-forward with The Man in Black and everything, so we have a plan for season five but you know, life can make other plans for you."

Westworld aired on HBO in the US.
