Grey's Anatomy star joins Only Murders in the Building season 3

Grey's Anatomy star Jesse Williams has been cast in season 3 of Only Murders in the Building.

The smash hit Disney+ series follows three unlikely friends who live in the same building in New York City and connect over their obsession with true crime cases.

Williams, best known as Dr. Jackson Avery on the long-running medical drama, will play "a documentarian with a particular interest in the case" that will rock the apartment building and its residents, according to Deadline.

The final scene of season 2 featured a time jump that skipped ahead a year. A new character, Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd), dropped dead on stage on the opening night of Oliver's Broadway comeback.

"Season 1 was really centered around a Mabel story, and then Charles and his father emotionally led season 2 in many ways, so it feels right to lean into Oliver a bit more and his dream of a potential comeback," Only Murders in the Building creator John Hoffman previously told Entertainment Weekly.

"And so that's where it started to feel like we can go into the theater and imagine a break between them so that we have fodder for what happened in that year jump, and where are they when we join them in season 3 around this new problem they have.

"We reset them a little bit, reset their world, and yet the Arconia is still very present in season 3."

Williams spent 12 seasons playing Dr. Jackson Avery on the hugely popular ABC drama, Grey’s Anatomy, and he is set to reappear in a one-off episode in season 19.

Williams has also starred in numerous other notable projects, which have included The Cabin in the Woods, Prime Videos' Little Fires Everywhere alongside Reese Witherspoon, Brooklyn’s Finest, and the Owen Wilson comedy Secret Headquarters.

The actor also recently bagged himself a Tony Award nomination for his role in the Broadway revival of Take Me Out.

Grey's Anatomy season 19 airs on ABC in the US. In the UK, the show will stream on Disney+, where all episodes will be available when season 19 premieres on October 26.
