Emma Thompson has weighed in on Game of Thrones actor Sean Bean's controversial comments about how intimacy co-ordinators "spoil the spontaneity" of sex scenes on set.

In a recent interview with The Times, Bean spoke about how he thinks intimacy co-ordinators actually hinder his performance while on set.

"I think the natural way lovers behave would be ruined by someone bringing it right down to a technical exercise," explained Bean. "It would inhibit me more because it's drawing attention to things."

Now, Emma Thompson has responded to his statements while making an appearance on Australia's Fitzy & Wippa radio show.

When asked what she thinks about the comments, she said: "I don't know if you were speaking to someone who found it distracting, but [in] another conversation, you might find that people go: 'It made me comfortable, it made me feel safe, it made me feel as though I was able to do this work.'

"So intimacy coordinators are the most fantastic introduction in our work. And no, you can't just 'let it flow'. There's a camera there and a crew, it's not on your own in a hotel room. You're surrounded by a bunch of blokes carrying things. So, it's not a comfortable situation, full stop," she added.

Bean's comments also prompted his Snowpiercer co-star Lena Hall to respond.

When speaking about a sex scene he did with Hall, he had said: "I suppose it depends on the actress. This one had a musical cabaret background, so she was up for anything."

To this, Hall tweeted: "Just because I am in theater (not cabaret, but I do perform them every once in a while) does not mean that I am up for anything."

Snowpiercer airs on TNT in the US. UK viewers can catch up with each season on Netflix.
