Star Trek: Strange New Worlds series 1 finale spoilers follow.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds introduced The Vampire Diaries star Paul Wesley in the first season finale – and he is set to feature a lot more heavily in season 2.

Obviously, Wesley's debut episode had a lot of important season finale stuff going on, so we didn't get to spend too much with his younger version of classic Star Trek character James T Kirk. However, it's been confirmed that upcoming episodes will have more room for the actor to breathe and show us different facets to Kirk's personality.

Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con, where Digital Spy was present, Wesley teased Kirk's role in season 2 of Strange New Worlds, stating: "We only saw Kirk really for a handful of scenes in the finale.

"That specific episode was fairly intense, and if you watch the original 'Balance of Terror', Kirk is quite intense in that episode.

What to Read Next

"I'm looking forward to viewers seeing a different side of Kirk – and certainly not an alternate timeline Kirk, but a lieutenant. So he's a much younger Kirk. He certainly hasn't developed into the Captain Kirk that we know.

"There's more levity, it's an exciting season, so I'm really looking forward to people seeing that."

Another thing that we'll see in Strange New Worlds season 2 is a crossover with animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks, something that showrunner Henry Alonso Myers explained came around in an amusingly roundabout way.

He said: "One of our writers David Reid also works on The Boys, and he was just like: 'Hey, wouldn't it be funny if we do a crossover?' and we were like: 'Yeah, that'd be great!'

"The crazy thing is that we had this whole discussion about it and then I get a call from Alex [Kurtzman], completely separate, wasn't about the show, and he said: 'I think you guys should think about doing a crossover with Lower Decks...'

"And I was like, 'I've got some good news for you!'"
