The Resident spoilers follow.
Andrew McCarthy will be joining the cast of medical drama The Resident as a recurring character in the last few episodes of season 5, with the opportunity to return if the show is renewed.
According to Deadline, McCarthy's character will be called Dr Ian Sullivan, a charming paediatric surgeon who masks a hidden streak of narcissism behind his charismatic exterior.
While a hero to his patients, Dr Sullivan also struggles with a "complex relationship with his own daughter".

McCarthy made his name in the 1980s, starring in films such as St. Elmo's Fire, Pretty in Pink and Weekend at Bernie's, becoming known as a member of the "brat pack" (a group of young actors in the '80s who frequently appeared in teen films) alongside Rob Lowe and Molly Ringwald.

The Resident recently said goodbye to Miles Fowler, who played Trevor Daniels, after a brief time on the show. Fowler's character left the series after deciding to abandon his career as a doctor to take a job at a biotech startup. Fowler's reps later confirmed that the actor had only signed a one-year deal to appear in the show.
While the medical drama has not officially been renewed for a sixth season, it is currently in talks with show producer Fox over continuing the series.
The Resident season 5 airs on Tuesday at 8/7c on FOX in the US. In the UK, season 5 is airing on Fridays at 9pm on Sky Witness, and you can catch up on seasons 1-3 via Disney+.
