Netflix fantasy series Locke & Key has been confirmed to be coming to an end after its upcoming third season, with the streaming service revealing the news alongside some first-look images from the new season.

A series of photos from season three of the drama were dropped on Netflix's official Instagram account this week, with the revelatory caption: "YOUR FIRST LOOK at the 3rd and final season of Locke & Key – coming later this year."

Co-showrunners and executive producers Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill used the Instagram post to share a statement about the show coming to an end, writing: "Once we began working on the series, we felt three seasons was the ideal length to bring the story of the Locke family and their Keyhouse adventures to a satisfying conclusion.

"As storytellers, we are grateful that we had the opportunity to tell our version of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez's incredible story exactly the way we wanted. We're keeping the magical keys, though, for our own personal use."

In the meantime, though, fans can be consoled by the sneak peek images from season three, which promise plenty more danger for the characters. Some unseen enemies will be confronted with axes and mallets, while Tyler (Connor Jessup) is seen looking very rattled by a mysterious something.

Locke & Key follows Nina Locke (Darby Stanchfield) and her three children, Tyler, Kinsey (Emilia Jones) and Bode (Jackson Robert Scott), as they move to the family home of patriarch Rendell, who has been murdered by a former student.

After taking up residence in Keyhouse, the children start to find mysterious keys hidden throughout the house and they soon discover that the keys can be used to unlock doors in magical ways.

However, they aren't the only ones who know about the keys, as there is also a demonic entity trying to hunt them down for its own evil purposes.

Cuse and Averill have previously teased that season three will focus "much more heavily" on the Locke family and that they will be tasked with defeating "the greatest threat they've had to face yet" before the show bows out.

"Part of our challenge, that we happily take on, is that every season, we need to outdo the season before it," Averill said. "It's a challenge, but it's a fun one and I think we've been able to do that."

Locke & Key seasons one and two are available to stream on Netflix. Season three is due for release later this year.
