How I Met Your Father has landed a second season a month after the show made its debut.

The How I Met Your Mother sequel series stars Hilary Duff in the central role, with Kim Cattrall playing her older version as she recounts how she met her son's father.

Streamer Hulu has now confirmed that season two is officially happening, with 20 episodes ordered – though a release date is yet to be announced.

It comes after it emerged that How I Met Your Father is set to hit Disney+ in the UK from early next month.

The show's creators have also opened up about how the series is trying to avoid the same trap as its predecessor, namely the fact that the big reveal scene was planned and filmed eight years before the finale aired.

However, it looks like things will be much looser for the new series, with co-creator Elizabeth Berger telling TVLine before the renewal news: "We were much more concerned with having people fall in love with our show."

"[We] don't have a strict number [of seasons]," Isaac Aptaker added.

"It's been really interesting, because we're the first multi-cam [series] that Hulu has ever made. We're figuring out what an old-school sitcom looks like on [streaming], and in terms of season length, you usually do 22-24 episodes. We don't need to do that," he revealed. "So, we're able to map out these really intricate, 10-episode puzzles."

Berger also admitted they would plan ideas once they had a clearer idea of a second season – which they now do – explaining: "Going forward, we can start mapping that out more specifically."

How I Met Your Father also stars Christopher Lowell, Francia Raisa, Suraj Sharma, Tom Ainsley and Tien Tran.

How I Met Your Father airs Tuesday nights on Hulu in the US and Wednesdays on Disney+ in the UK.
