The creator of Vikings has compared the scale of the Valhalla spin-off show to the main show's finale.

The historical drama will come to an end with the release of the second half of its sixth season on Wednesday (December 30) on Amazon Prime Video, although a spin-off called Vikings: Valhalla has already been announced by Netflix.

Set 100 years after the events of Vikings, the series will feature some of the most recognisable names across Viking history — but speaking recently, Vikings boss Michael Hirst said the new series "couldn't be on a greater scale" than the final episodes of Vikings.

So, the sixth season's final episodes are probably pretty epic.

"It couldn't be on a greater scale than the final episodes of my Vikings because the armies and the big battles we had... You really can't get much bigger than that, actually," Hirst told Collider.

"But what can I say? It is being made in the same places, a lot of it. We go back to Kattegat. That, of course, is the spiritual home of the Vikings. But it's a changed Kattegat. It's an established... It's one of the biggest ports really, trading ports in Europe. It's grown in size and significance."

He added: "The King of England has become a Viking. The Vikings have overrun most of England and they own Normandy. In that sense, considering where we came from in my show, they've established themselves on the world stage big time.

"But the same conflict between Christian and Pagan has become an internal conflict, because a lot of Viking Kings have converted to Christianity. So there is a perpetual conflict and huge warfare between Christian and Pagan Vikings."

"That's different for my show," Hirst added. "Of course when the enemy, the Christians, were different people they were sacrificial. But now, as Floki feared, the Christians are overcoming the pagans."

The comments follow Hirst previously explaining why Vikings is coming to an end following its sixth season.

They also follow on from Vikings star Alexander Ludwig announcing his engagement to girlfriend Lauren Dear.

Vikings concludes with its final episodes on December 30, streaming via Amazon Prime Video.
