Jon Favreau's The Mandalorian may be heading toward its season two finale, but before getting there, the sci-fi spectacular delivered its most emotional episode to date with December 4's 'Chapter 14: The Tragedy'. As well as living up to its heart-wrenching title, 'The Tragedy' was important in setting up the season's endgame with the long-awaited return of Boba Fett.

Temuera Morrison has rejoined the galaxy far, far away, but unlike his role as Jango Fett in Episode II: Attack of the Clones, the star was suiting up to play an altogether more important bounty hunter.

While fans were distracted by the return of Ming-Na Wen's Fennec Shand, Moff Gideon's terrifying quartet of Dark Troopers, and the Empire finally snatching Grogu, the eventful trip to Tython proved fruitful for long-term fans of Star Wars who've enjoyed the whistle-stop tour of previously canned Expanded Universe stories that have been rightfully returned to canon. Now, one eagle-eyed Mando fan has deciphered Boba Fett's mysterious message hiding inside his iconic armour.

As with all things in The Mandalorian, every tiny detail has been mapped out. There are several in-universe languages in Star Wars, with Boba's message being quickly translated from the native Mando'a. Posting on Reddit, u/kinneroth revealed the decoded message in its (almost) complete form. According to the post, the message reads as follows:

  • Foundling
  • Took Into
  • The Year The
  • Concord Dawn
  • Mentor Jast
  • Father Fett
  • Boba Fett

There are a number of big takeaways here, including the return of a forgotten Legends character. Firstly, there's a mention of Concord Dawn that was previously established as Jango's home planet. The other talking point is a mention of "Mentor Jast" seemingly being a nod to the character Jaster Mereel. Introduced in Haden Blackman and Ramón F Bach's Jango Fett: Open Seasons, Jaster was an integral part of the Mandalorian Civil War and served as the Mand'alor – the leader of all clans. In Legends canon, Mereel rescued Jango from Concord Dawn and came to think of him as his son. The seasoned fighter was killed in action, which then led Jango on a mission of vengeance as Count Dooku's personal bodyguard.

Added to the Jaster Mereel message, 'The Tragedy' also made Jango Fett more relevant than ever. The episode had another emotional twist with confirmation that Jango Fett is a true Mandalorian. It's been debated a lot over the years, but until recently, it was assumed Jango was a simple mercenary who offended Mandalore by wearing Mandalorian armour.

With Boba being Jango's clone son, it was also common knowledge that he also wasn't "worthy" of wearing the Mandalorian armour. In one fell swoop, director Dave Filoni finally gave the Fett family the Mandalorian backstory it deserves.

Even if Jango has been largely MIA in established canon since Attack of the Clones' lukewarm reception back in 2002, The Mandalorian has redeemed his reputation with a simple Easter egg. With Boba Fett revealing his father's Mandalorian lineage, Din Djarin agreed that the armour belongs back with its rightful owner. To be honest, it's not like the titular Mando needed two suits of armour anyway.

Even though Concord Dawn has been mentioned in both Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, that's nothing compared to The Mandalorian doubling down on canon. The character of Jango Fett didn't exactly get much screen time before he was decapitated in Attack of the Clones, so there's a sense of justice that Morrison got to flesh out the character while also playing Boba.

Although it's unlikely the live-action world would revisit the story of Jango, at least loyal Legends supporters have seen this forgotten arc return. Then again, with continued rumours of a Boba Fett series, anything could happen.

As for Boba Fett's continuing role in The Mandalorian, it looks like he'll be part of Djarin's very own Squad Goals AF. Both Fennec and Boba have pledged allegiance to Mando, while the group is now heading to pick up Mayfield.

Alongside this, who could forget Timothy Olyphant's Cobb Vanth, Katee Sackhoff's Bo-Katan Kryze, and Rosario Dawson's Ahsoka Tano? Things are building toward a dramatic showdown with Moff Gideon as Favreau and co. have turned The Mandalorian into a treasure trove of Expanded Universe treats.
