After managing to sidestep the possible murder of her mentor Saul Berenson, Homeland introduced a time-jump where Carrie has fled to Russia. She's now living with Yevgeny Gromov and sending intelligence to Saul – effectively replacing the asset she was forced to dispose of earlier in the episode.

As the credits rolled for one last time, Homeland viewers piled onto social media to share their thoughts.

"The finale of @SHO_Homeland was utterly jaw dropping with its twisty conclusion that in the end was completely satisfying. Both [Claire] Danes and [Mandy] Patinkin were at their best. The show will be missed," read one tweet.

Someone else also showered the finale with praise, writing: "I do not have words for the perfection of tonight's episode. It was stunning in every detail and a quintessential gem that we could not possibly have seen coming in our wildest dreams.

"I'm in literal pain from it's sheer beauty and completeness. 8 years! Thank you."

Did Homeland just outdo The Sopranos and Breaking Bad for greatest ever TV ending?

Homeland airs on Channel 4 in the UK and Showtime in the US.
