Doom Patrol star Matt Bomer has lined up his next big TV role, in the form of a limited series which he will both star in and executive produce.

Fellow Travelers will air as an eight-part series on Showtime, Deadline reports, and is being created and executive produced by Homeland executive producer Ron Nyswaner.

Also among the executive producers are All American's Robbie Rogers and American Crime Story: Versace director Daniel Minahan, who will also direct the first two episodes.

Fellow Travelers, which is based on the 2007 Thomas Mallon novel of the same name, is described as "a love story and political thriller, chronicling the volatile romance of two very different men who meet in the shadow of McCarthy-era Washington".

Bomer is due to play the charismatic Hawkins Fuller, who has a successful behind-the-scenes political career and avoids emotional entanglements at all costs.

One day he meets Tim Laughlin, "a young man brimming with idealism and religious faith", and the pair begin a romance, just as Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn declare a war on "subversives and sexual deviants".

Their paths then cross continuously across four decades, as they try to navigate the obstacles that the world puts in their way.

Work is due to begin on the show in July.

Jana Winograde, President of Entertainment at Showtime Networks, said of the announcement: "As a thrilling and deeply moving exploration of character and American life in the latter half of the past century, Fellow Travelers shines an unprecedented light on stories that are as urgent today as ever.

"The series delivers us directly into an insider world of Washington rife with national consequences, while drawing out the intimate moments that are profoundly personal and often heartbreaking."

Bomer is known for playing Larry Trainor / Negative Man in DC series Doom Patrol, while he has also had roles in The Sinner, American Horror Story and White Collar.

Executive producer Nyswaner, meanwhile, executive produced Homeland between 2015 and 2017, while he was Oscar-nominated for his screenplay to 1993 movie Philadelphia.
