Nine years in the making, Homeland's forthcoming series finale will place Claire Danes' Carrie Mathison in one hell of a sticky situation.

Airing yesterday (April 19) across the Atlantic, season 8's penultimate episode 'The English Teacher' left a cliffhanger in which CIA agent Carrie must either allow a war to break out between America and Pakistan, or dispose of her close friend Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin).

Discovering that Saul does in fact have a female mole inserted in the Russian government, Carrie found it impossible to extract their identity after it became clear that they used a complex communication system hidden inside the spines of old books.

Yevgeny Gromov, who currently holds Carrie at his mercy, suggested to her: "You can still take Saul out of [the] picture."

Saul's death would mean that each of his assets are then passed down to someone he holds close – Carrie – who could then successfully destroy the mole.

"I hoped you'd find another way, but like you said, you've tried everything. What's left? Kill Saul," added Yevgeny.
