When it comes to Making a Murderer's Steven Avery, Kathleen Zellner is still on the case.

The civil rights attorney has been working tirelessly on the true-crime subject's appeal. In a recent Twitter Q&A with her followers, Zellner offered yet more updates.

There seems to be a sense that Avery's attempts for exoneration are getting blocked at every turn, particularly as the most recent request for new DNA testing was denied by the Wisconsin Court of Appeals.

Zellner said immediately after the ruling that this was no cause for concern, as the court simply wanted to "resolve the issues on Avery's current appeal before the new issue re: bone testing is addressed".

Now Zellner has told one fan: "Steven's case has not been decided by the Appellate Court. We've only gotten 3 opinions from the trial court. We're just beginning the battle."

"The only decisions we've lost were at the trial court level and 99% of exonerations are at a higher court, and we haven't gotten there yet," the lawyer later reiterated.

Zellner has a growing list of successful exonerations to her name, having worked on a number of other cases.

Shedding a little more light on the post-conviction process, she explained that "all of these cases take an eternity".

"We've been in the case 3 years," she said of the Avery appeal. "Average time is 15 years."

Zellner and her team are currently waiting for the Court of Appeals to rule on their latest motion, which concerns the whereabouts of suspected bone fragments.

Avery's attorney believes it's a "good sign" that they have not had a response yet, as it could indicate that "they are closely examining the issue".

Making a Murderer Part 1 and Part 2 are now streaming on Netflix.
