Dolores Avery, the mother of Making a Murderer's central subject Steven Avery, has passed away at the age of 83.
Steven Avery's lawyer Kathleen Zellner, who featured in season two of the Netflix series, announced the sad news on Twitter. Avery is currently serving life in prison for the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach, but has always maintained his innocence.
"Fate dealt another cruel blow to Steven Avery today right before his birthday tomorrow; his mother Dolores Avery passed away at 6:50 am," Kathleen wrote yesterday (July 8).
In a separate post, the wrongful conviction advocate paid tribute to the matriarch of the Avery family, who died in hospice care. "Sweet Dolores Avery always had a kind word for us," she said.
"Loved her family, lived for the day Steven was freed, never stopped believing in him and his innocence. Her spirit and devotion will sustain us. Steven knows she is watching over him."

In a statement to US outlet TMZ, Steven Avery said that the passing of his mum while he remains in prison had always been his "worst nightmare".
"Losing my parents before I got out has always been my worst nightmare. Now it has happened. I worry my Dad will not live to see me as a free man," he said.
"Today I lost the person I most wanted to take care of and give a better life when I am freed. I cannot put in words the pain of losing my mom."
