It's official: Star Trek: Discovery is getting a second season.

The renewal for the popular sci-fi series was confirmed on social media with a GIF of the USS Discovery flying upwards.

In a statement, CBS Interactive executive Marc DeBevoise said: "This series has a remarkable creative team and cast who have demonstrated their ability to carry on the Star Trek Legacy.

"We are extremely proud of what they've accomplished, and are thrilled to be bringing fans a second season of this tremendous series."

Created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman, Star Trek: Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham, the first officer of the USS Discovery. Six episodes have aired so far.

Episode five 'Choose Your Pain' introduced a first for the Star Trek universe – both on TV and in the movies – as Cadet Tilly (Mary Wiseman) followed by Lt Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) dropped F-bombs on the show.

"These people just put their brains to work in a really tough way and they had a breakthrough. And I imagine there's scientists in their labs who might do that any time. We didn't drop the F-bomb in Star Trek by telling something to go f**k themselves."

Shazad Latif, Doug Jones, and Jason Isaacs also star in the series.

Star Trek: Discovery airs on CBS All Access in the US and Netflix in the UK.
