Even if you couldn't give a toss about politics, you'd be hard-pushed to avoid the news that former International Development Secretary Priti Patel has resigned from her job.

After news of a secret holiday-cum-work-trip in Israel, Priti found herself with no choice but to resign from Prime Minister Theresa May's cabinet.

But her replacement, who was announced earlier today (November 9), isn't as boring as you might think – oh no, she's actually a reality star.

Yes, the MP for Portsmouth North, Penny Mordaunt, once appeared on ITV's now-defunct reality series Splash!. Y'know, the one with Tom Daley and celebrity belly flops?

Penny found herself facing a wave of criticism after taking the plunge to appear on the series back in 2014, but has always defended her decision to have a bit of fun.

Speaking to Digital Spy at the time, Penny revealed why she wasn't worried about returning to Westminster after her stint on the show, arguing that being an MP is not about being serious – at least, not all of the time.

"In my time I have worn pink bunny ears, I've been dunked by my local football club and their charity – you do all sorts of crazy and wacky things," she explained.

"We do that alongside having to deal with really serious stuff – yesterday I was in the chamber talking about Syria, later today I'm going to be doing some stuff with the MOD."

Now that MPs are branching out into the reality TV world (hey, Jeremy Corbyn, Michael Fabricant), perhaps it's time for the reality world to branch out into politics.

Joey Essex for Foreign Secretary, anyone?
