Laura Whitmore has confirmed a new acting role, with the star set to step onto the stage once more.

The presenter and actor, who previously hosted Love Island, has already appeared on the stage in 2:22 A Ghost Story. She has now landed a new role in the stage adaptation of The Girl on the Train, which is based on Paula Hawkins' 2015 novel.

Whitmore will play Rachel Watson, a woman who, according to the play's synopsis, "longs for a different life. Her only escape is the perfect couple she watches through the train window every day, happy and in love. Or so it appears.

Whitmore will take over the role of Rachel from the already-announced Giovanna Fletcher, with Whitmore's run beginning at Brighton Theatre Royal on June 3. She will stop off in Milton Keynes, Malvern, Aberdeen, Leeds, Inverness, Mold, Southampton, Belfast and Cork before concluding in Dublin on August 30.

What to Read Next

"I read the book when it first came out and I was obsessed by it," said Whitmore of her new role. "I love it when you find a book and all you can think about is that story. You wake up a little bit earlier to read the book and stay up too late to finish it. I am excited to show people my portrayal of Rachel next summer."

Fletcher's run as Rachel will precede Whitmore's, with her stint beginning at Richmond Theatre on January 14 before concluding at the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham on March 29. Further casting will be announced in due course.

Hawkins' novel was previously adapted into a feature film back in 2016, with Emily Blunt playing Rachel in a BAFTA nominated performance. The movie also starred Rebecca Ferguson, Haley Bennett, Justin Theroux, Luke Evans and Lisa Kudrow.

Love Island airs on ITV2 and streams on ITVX.
