Glee star Matthew Morrison has left the new series of So You Think You Can Dance after filming a few episodes.

The actor turned judge has issued a statement to Variety, explaining that he didn't follow "competition production protocols", although he didn't explain what exactly those protocols are.

"Having the opportunity to be a judge on So You Think You Can Dance was an incredible honor for me," he said. "Therefore, it is my deepest regret to inform you that I will be leaving the show.

"After filming the audition rounds for the show and completing the selection of the 12 finalists, I did not follow competition production protocols, preventing me from being able to judge the competition fairly.

"I cannot apologize enough to all involved and I will be watching alongside you all on what I know will be one of the best seasons yet."

The publication reports that Morrison is featured in the first four episodes of season 17, two of which have already aired. A replacement judge has not been announced at the time of writing.

The latest season of So You Think You Can Dance was meant to take place in 2020, with Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy and Laurieann Gibson all set to return as judges, but plans changed when the season was postponed indefinitely.

Morrison and pop star/dancer JoJo Siwa were announced as new judges, joined by Stephen 'tWitch' Boss, who was the runner up on the 2008 series of the dancing competition.

So You Think You Can Dance airs Wednesday nights on Fox in the United States. It doesn't currently have a UK broadcaster.
