The Great British Bake Off returned just when we needed it – but despite glowing praise from audiences and boosted viewing figures, Tuesday's episode has prompted a number of complaints to broadcasting watchdog Ofcom.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Ofcom initially confirmed it had received 181 complaints about the new series' opener earlier this week, the "vast majority" of which related to Matt Lucas' impression of Boris Johnson.

Ofcom has since confirmed to Digital Spy that this number has now risen slightly to around 200 complaints.

The comedian, who now presents the show alongside Noel Fielding following Sandi Toksvig's departure, kicked off the show with a spoof of the prime minister's broadcast to the nation amid the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

Sporting a convincing platinum wig, Matt Lucas delivered an important message to viewers behind a podium bearing the message: "Stay Alert, Protect Cake, Save Loaves".

"We are now approaching Phase 46, which means that from Tuesday morning or Wednesday evening, depending on your height," he began, mimicking the prime minister with unnerving ease.

"We are saying with regards to baking, if you must bake in a tent, bake in a tent, but please don't bake in a tent."

Despite a few grumbles, the Bake Off's return was a resounding success, with Tuesday's (September 22) episode becoming the series' most-watched premiere since it moved from the Beeb to Channel 4 in 2017.

The Great British Bake Off continues Tuesday, September 29 at 8pm on Channel 4.
