The Great British Bake Off will be cutting Paul Hollywood's "thoughtless" joke about diabetes from all future broadcasts of this week's semi-final episode.

The judge came under fire from viewers during Tuesday night's (October 22) episode when he remarked that one of the contestants' bake looked like "diabetes on a plate", with viewers claiming that the comment reinforced myths that you can contract diabetes from eating too much sugar.

While Hollywood later apologised for the remark, calling it a "thoughtless" comment and adding that he "meant no harm", charity Diabetes UK has now revealed that the moment will be edited out of the programme in future broadcasts after getting in touch with the show's producers.

"Some of you may have seen or heard about the reference to #diabetes made on this week's episode of #GBBO," the charity posted today (October 24).

"We've been in touch with the producers and @Channel4 to explain how remarks like this can lead to misunderstanding, and be upsetting for people affected by diabetes. We hope that this will lead to more positive and informed conversations about #diabetes – both in the media and more widely."

And just an hour later, Diabetes UK shared an update explaining that the comment will be removed from all repeats of the episode.

"We're really pleased to say that #GBBO production company @LoveProductions have confirmed that the comment about diabetes will be removed from any future repeats of the episode, and our advice around how to talk about #diabetes is going to be shared across the company," Diabetes UK added.

The Great British Bake Off concludes next week as Alice Fevronia, Steph Blackwell and David Atherton return to the tent one final time to impress the judges with their bakes in a bid to win the 2019 series.

The Great British Bake Off airs on Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 4, and spin-off show The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice airs on Fridays at 8pm, also on Channel 4.
