Barbara Windsor's husband Scott Mitchell has revealed how the EastEnders icon's health has deteriorated as she continues to battle Alzheimer's.

He revealed last year that the Peggy Mitchell actress had been diagnosed with the degenerative brain disease, and has continued to update on her health as a way to raise awareness.

Speaking on Loose Women today, he said: "When I was last here, I told you there were moments of confusion where she didn't quite know where the house is. That has progressed, that is now something we have every single night.

"From about 5pm onwards, I believe it's quite common with Alzheimer's patients – it's called sundowning. As it gets darker, they become more confused.

"It does become a loop where from that time, 5 o'clock onwards, she does constantly ask me the same questions about the house. 'How long are we staying here for, how did we get here, are we going to be here long' and I constantly and gently remind her that this is our home and this is where we live and she'll look at something and go, 'Oh yeah, there's photos'.

"Of course, the clearest memories for Barbara are way before me. Her clearest things are her early career."

The couple first met in 1992 when Scott was 28 and she was 55, and they married in 2000.

Scott is running the London Marathon in aid of Dementia Revolution in the actress' name alongside a number of EastEnders stars including Kellie Shirley who played Carly Wicks, and Tanya Franks who plays Rainie.
