Good news for fans of BBC One's Poldark – star of the show Aidan Turner believes it could run for five series.

The first series of the drama finishes tonight (April 26), but Tuner thinks Poldark could be on our screens for years to come.

The actor plays Captain Ross Poldark on the show, which is based on Winston Graham's Poldark book series.

Speaking to RadioTimes.com, Turner said: "It's popular now, we are all behind it, but it is impossible to predict these things. If it does continue, the books are there."

He added: "In the first series we covered the first two novels and there's 12 in total. Winston [Graham] has given us the stories. I think it could maybe go on for four or five series."

Discussing the success of the series, Turner said: "Maybe people find there is a romanticism about the show which works.

"It's hard to predict the trend sometimes: why people latch onto a show, why things become popular, why Downton took off. When we were making Poldark we were wondering if it was going to have an audience, but it seems we struck it lucky."

The executive producers of Poldark recently insisted that Turner's famous shirtless scenes are entirely story-driven.

Before the first series run, Turner told Digital Spy that the show was "sexy as hell", adding: "I have a nude swimming scene - I get naked a couple of times in it.

"I wasn't allowed any Cornish pasties, 'cos I'd get fat - and I have to take my top off so much!"

He later admitted to using "some kind of baby oil" and "eyeliner" to help achieve his smouldering appearance.

Poldark continues tonight on BBC One at 9pm.
