The Great British Bake Off's early standout Steven Carter-Bailey learned on Tuesday that there's a fine line between confidence and overconfidence.

The Watford-based marketer has clinched the Star Baker honour twice so far already this season (for his Bonfire Night Cake and delicious Amarpressi Biscuit), and last week still managed to impress the judges despite not coming top of the leaderboard.

Sadly, it all went a bit wrong for Steven during Pudding Week, when he couldn't hide his scorn as he watched judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith heap praise on the other bakers' molten chocolate cakes in the technical challenge. Baking his own cakes for 25 minutes, instead of the correct 10, was a bad move.

"What a pity! I thought we had a winner here," Prue complained after biting into his stodgy molten cake.

The trouble only continued in the showcase round for Steven, when his USA-inspired From Across the Jelly Pond trifle earned yet two more thumbs down from Paul and Prue despite looking fab.

"Disappointing. I don't like rubber," Paul grimaced, adding: "It's not good. It's a shame because it looks amazing."

Even Prue sneered: "It's a little tough."

The good news is that Steven managed to slide through to the next round by the skin of his teeth, so he'll definitely have a shot at redemption next week. And let's face it, there are still many on Twitter that love him!

In the end, Sophie was named Star Baker by Paul and Prue for her delectable trifle — while James was sent home at the culmination of Pudding Week.

The Great British Bake Off continues next Tuesday (October 3) at 8pm on Channel 4.
