Jenny Agutter has revealed that she wants a Call the Midwife movie – but there's one big reason why she thinks it won't happen.

Speaking to Digital Spy, the cast were asked were asked if the hit BBC show could follow in the footsteps of Downton Abbey and get itself a movie.

Agutter replied: "I wish. I sometimes think our Christmas Specials could go as a film."

However, the actress believes it may be difficult to adapt the Call the Midwife into a feature-length film because the show is 'totally BBC' and there's no outside funding.

"What is slightly harder with us is that we are totally BBC," she said. "If there was outside money then people would be talking film and talking release.

"But because it's totally BBC, I think that's the reason why we stay on television.
