After Keira Knightley sparked a debate on Disney films and feminism, Holly Willoughby has made her views on the subject clear.

Earlier this week, Knightley told Ellen DeGeneres that she has banned her 3-year-old daughter from watching some Disney films like Cinderella, because "she waits around for a rich guy to rescue her".

On Thursday (18 October), This Morning explored the issue in a segment titled 'Are fairy tales sexist?'.

As Holly and her co-host Phillip Schofield discussed the topic with actress Linda Lusardi and choreographer Liv Lorent, who has reinterpreted classic tales like Rumpelstiltskin, she firmly defended the famous movies.

Speaking about her love of Disney, Holly revealed that the films were an important part of her childhood, but that she has "grown up pretty empowered". The TV presenter, who has three children with her husband Dan Baldwin, also shared that she named her daughter after Belle from Beauty and the Beast, and even included a Disney song in her wedding.

"I called my daughter Belle, I walked down the aisle to a song from Disney," Holly said on the show. "For me, that was my childhood and I've grown up pretty empowered, I've grown up pretty independent.

"I think that, in a way, is it not insulting to suggest that a woman as she grows older can't differentiate between fact and fiction? Or that that Prince might not be a Prince which comes out [of] a castle, but to you individually the man you marry and fall in love with has Prince-like qualities because he's the one for you?"

Phillip shared a similar sentiment to his co-star. "I've got two daughters and they loved reading those fairytales when they were younger," he said. "They have grown up to be strong, independent women. They weren't affected by anything they read there, it was fantasy."

Viewers were quick to chime in on Twitter. While many agreed with Holly and Phil's view on the matter, saying they were "talking sense", some branded the entire debate "stupid" and "ridiculous".

This Morning airs on weekdays from 10.30am on ITV.
