BBC One's McMafia continued tonight (January 2), but could Hossein Amini and James Watkins' gritty crime thriller improve on its shaken but not stirred opening?

While viewers were left confused by the premiere, episode 2 still had the Twitterverse talking.

Effectively James Norton's audition to play the next James Bond, McMafia continued to follow its lead – Norton's financier Alex Godman – as he took a walk to the dark side.

This time, Alex was out to avenge the death of Uncle Boris and became involved with organised crime with the simple click of a mouse.

It was an even darker episode than the one before, and some weren't impressed with the human trafficking plot for mid-week viewing on the Beeb.

Also, the BBC's use of confusing subtitles was something that was still turning others away in their droves.

However, it didn't stop some tuning in just for Norton. It wasn't long before he was flashing his shredded body and showing everyone exactly why he could take over from Daniel Craig.

Aside from a befuddling plot, most people seemed to notice the use of a shifty Eddie Jordan lookalike.

However, others just simply loved the slow-burning thriller and refused to accept its critics.

Tipped as an edge-of-seat thriller, there were high hopes for McMafia after the success of The Night Manager, but it seems like something is still missing. Maybe we should reserve judgement for episode 3?
