The BBC reigned supreme in the Christmas Day overnight ratings yesterday (December 25) – as the broadcaster took eight positions in the top 10 most-watched programmes list.

According to an official release from the BBC, it has been revealed that Mrs Brown's Boys was number one with an average audience of 6.8 million, followed by Strictly Come Dancing's Christmas special with 6.5m.

In third place was Call the Midwife with a 80-minute special being seen live by 6.3m.

EastEnders topped the ratings in terms of soaps, with their explosive episode also getting 6.3 million people glued to their screens – while over on ITV Coronation Street's cliffhanger episode received 5.1m and Emmerdale's ambitious Robert Sugden edition garnered 3.7m, marking their only two entries in the Christmas top 10.

The Queen's Speech had 5.9m, while Peter Capaldi's last appearance as the Twelfth Doctor in Doctor Who got 5.7m. The BBC News and The Highway Rat came in eighth and ninth position, respectively.

While these figures reflect how many have seen what overnight, it's worth bearing in mind that the overall chart could be very different.
