We can't seem to deny the fact that the Christmas specials for Doctor Who are often a gloomy affair. Whether it was The Doctor saying his final goodbye to River Song or Clara Oswald dying in 'The Snowmen', Christmas episodes sometimes give us an emotional punch to the gut.

However, we can all cheer up and be merry because Peter Capaldi has promised that this year's special will be on the lighter side.

Reacting to the superhero-themed episode, Capaldi said: "When I read the script I thought this is wonderful because it captures for me the delightful light comedy touch that existed in the early Superman movies with Christopher Reeve.

"I was very happy to read it and to go with this whole idea of the doctor observing this superhero. It's fun. It's great fun."

He later added to the show's official YouTube channel: "So this is very much a light-hearted, superhero romp."

Perfect. To be honest, this sounds like just what we need after 2016.

As for that superhero, head writer Steven Moffat has insisted to press including Digital Spy that 'The Return of Doctor Mysterio' will not take the piss out of superheroes. Honest.

But if you can't wait until tomorrow's episode (December 25) to find out just what exactly happens, treat yourself to some Christmas spoilers.

Doctor Who: The Return of Doctor Mysterio airs at 5.45pm, Christmas Day on BBC One.
