Red Eye, the thriller starring Jing Lusi and Martin Compston, has confirmed its release date for the second season. Described as "propulsive", this could be a perfect treat for viewers over the festive period.

The first season of the ITV series followed Detective Hana Li (Lusi) as she embarked on a flight between London and Beijing, which was carrying fugitive Dr Matthew Nolan (Richard Armitage) as he awaited trial for manslaughter.

As the flight got under way, a series of killings took place, with the walls seemingly closing in on Matthew as he claimed innocence in all charges, with the doctor insisting that a conspiracy was taking place.

The second season sees Lusi reprise her role as the detective, with the action taking place in the US embassy as an emergency situation devolves into a gradual game of murder and intrigue.

Featuring Compston in a guest role, it has been confirmed that Red Eye will return to ITV1 and ITVX on New Year's Day, with some new images and a teaser trailer accompanying the announcement.

What to Read Next

"Inside the US Embassy, the celebrations for a newly appointed US Ambassador to London are shattered when a call, threatening to blow a British plane out of the sky if anyone leaves, triggers an immediate embassy lockdown," reads the logline.

From there, a spate of murders within the embassy threaten the world, with Hana landing in a "political and jurisdictional nightmare". She does get help from Head of Embassy Security Clay Brody (Compston), though they have a fractured relationship.

"Hana has to see her way past her distrust of him and focus on the investigation, because this time it’s personal," continues the synopsis. "The plane that will be blown up is a government jet and Director General Madeline Delaney (Lesley Sharp) is onboard.
