Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker has opened up on the creation of the 'USS Callister' sequel episode.

The upcoming season 7 will end with the 88-minute long episode 'USS Callister: Into Infinity', a return to the Star Trek homage world first explored in season 4.

In an interview with Deadline, Brooker explained that the idea of a follow-up went through quite the rocky journey to its final form.

"Of all the stories we've done this one ['USS Callister'] ended as though we were setting it up for the sequel," he said.

"It went through various guises but in the end we made it feature length within the season. It took so long getting it together — we had the pandemic, writers' strike and then had to get everyone's schedules lined up, and that was its own Rubik's cube on a unicycle."

Brooker also told the publication that, after season 4 released, the folks behind Black Mirror considered either a stand-alone movie or a limited series for the 'USS Callister' sequel.

He also really enjoyed being able to write for the same characters again, as it's not something he gets to do very often. With one exception.

"The character I have written for most consistently is Philomena Cunk," he said.

Most of the cast of 'USS Callister' are back for the sequel, except for Michael Coel and Jesse Plemons (whose character is dead).

Meanwhile, other cast members starring across the new season include Peter Capaldi, Issa Rae, Paul Giamatti, Emma Corrin, Rashida Jones, Chris O'Dowd, Harriet Walter, and Will Poulter (who is playing a different character to the one he played in 'Bandersnatch').

Black Mirror season 7 will premiere on Netflix on April 10, while seasons 1-6 are available on the service now.
