Nicola Coughlan's TV show Big Mood has been renewed for a season two on Channel 4.

The dark comedy from creator Camilla Whitehill premiered last year and features the Bridgerton star and It's a Sin's Lydia West as best friends Maggie and Eddie.

The show has been praised for its portrayal of mental illness as it dives into Maggie's bipolar disorder and how it impacts her life and her relationships, particularly that with Eddie.

Now returning for a second chapter, the series will pick up a year after Maggie and Eddie's friendship breakup.

As Eddie returns for a wedding, Maggie is extremely jealous of her ex-friend's new pal, an impossibly optimistic spiritual healer named Whitney. Will the two protagonists be able to mend their bond?

"Deeply grateful to everyone who loves our mad, funny, sad show," Coughlan said in a statement.

"It's been one of the greatest joys of my life making it, and I'm beyond delighted that we get to come back and tell the next chapter of Maggie and Eddie's story.

"Rats at the ready," she added – a nod to the rodent infestation that was one of the most hilarious plot points of the first season.

West joined Coughlan in saying she is "so excited to reunite with my besties and work on series 2!"

"I can't wait to see the scripts and get back to the world of Eggie!" she added.

As for Whitehill, the showrunner said she's "overjoyed" to continue Maggie and Eddie's chaotic story.

"I had no plan B and zero transferable skills so I am overjoyed to be bringing Big Mood back for another round!" she said.

"Discovering that there are actually loads of weirdos who like the same weirdo stuff as me has been a real privilege. My eternal love and gratitude go to everyone at Channel 4, Dancing Ledge and Fremantle for their fierce support and hard work.

"My ongoing blackmail campaign against Nicola Coughlan and Lydia West continues in earnest. They'll never escape me."

Big Mood season 2 will air on Channel 4.
