Netflix has released a full trailer for Sarah Lancashire's anticipated new spy series Black Doves.

The show, which is due to premiere this December, also stars Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw and focuses on a spy who seeks to uncover the truth about the death of her lover.

The first proper look at the series has now been unveiled, with the trailer soundtracked by a Raye cover of Nancy Sinatra's classic 'Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)'.

The show follows Helen, "a quick-witted, down-to-earth, dedicated wife and mother" and spy who has been passing on secrets about her politician husband for a decade to the shadowy Black Doves organisation.

However, "when her secret lover Jason (Andrew Koji) is assassinated, her spymaster, the enigmatic Reed (Lancashire), calls in Helen’s old friend Sam (Whishaw) to keep her safe," the synopsis reads.

"Together, Helen and Sam set off on a mission to investigate who killed Jason and why, leading them to uncover a vast, interconnected conspiracy linking the murky London underworld to a looming geopolitical crisis," it adds.

Ahead of its release, the upcoming Joe Barton series has already been renewed for a second season.

Black Doves also stars Carnival Row's Andrew Buchan, It’s a Sin's Omari Douglas, Warrior's Andrew Koji, Andor's Kathryn Hunter and Fool Me Once's Adeel Akhtar.

Speaking previously about the show, Barton revealed: "I started writing the scripts for this show over last year’s Christmas holidays, fuelled by turkey sandwiches and discarded bottles of cream liquor.

"To be now going into production with a cast and crew full of people whose work I admire so much is unbelievably exciting, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to get to see this show come to life."

Black Doves will premiere on Netflix on Thursday, December 5.
