Bluey has released a surprise new episode amid concerns the show is ending.

The latest instalment of the popular Australian animation, aptly titled 'Surprise', landed on Disney+ across the world on Sunday (April 21) — much to the excitement of fans.

The episode follows Bluey and her sister Bingo as they make their dad play two different games with them at the same time.

Speaking to The Guardian, Libbie Doherty, head of children and family at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), explained why the new episode was kept a secret from viewers.

"Bluey's hallmark charm is that it is always surprising, and we love to do things differently to keep the fans thinking," she said.

"Our intention was for the fans to wake up to their usual ABC Kids Sunday 8am slot and be blown away by a brand-new episode."

The secret episode comes after the success of the show's special 28-minute episode 'The Sign', which was released earlier in April and left many fans worried that the series would be ending after a "For Sale" sign appeared outside Bluey's family home.

Bluey producer Sam Moor later reassured fans that the show is not over, revealing that there will be "many more surprises" for viewers.

Appearing on Radio 4's Today programme, he confirmed: "No, it is not the end for Bluey. I'm sure we have many more surprises in store for you. We have more in store and we are thinking what would be next."

Moor went on to address the overwhelming response to the special episode, saying: "The team worked really hard to get that one out, everybody put all their love and effort into it."

The Emmy-winning children's series focuses on Blue Heeler puppy Bluey and her family, including father Bandit, mother Chilli and younger sister Bingo.

Across its three seasons, the show has featured cameo appearances from Platonic's Rose Byrne, Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda and May December's Natalie Portman.
