Apothecary Diaries has a delightfully unique premise. Set in the halls of a medieval palace in a fictional Chinese-inspired country, it was part romance and part murder mystery.

At the heart of the show is lead character Maomao and her love interest Jinshi, and after 24 episodes, fans are undoubtedly gutted to say farewell to the pair.

But what happens next? Apothecary Diaries aired its finale on March 23, and shortly after, the team behind the show confirmed it would return for season two. Here's what we know so far.

Apothecary Diaries season 2 plot: What will happen in Apothecary Diaries season 2?

The Apothecary Diaries anime is an adaptation of Natsu Hyūga and Touko Shino's beloved light novel series.

So far, the TV version of the story has covered roughly two of the 14 available light novel volumes, which means if the show does get renewed there's plenty of story left to cover.

The expansive source material means that Apothecary Diaries fans who are just watching the anime can read all about what's ahead for Maomao – although we won't spoil too much here.

The official blurb for volume three, which we'd assume would make up the next chunk of episodes in a potential Apothecary Diaries season two, reads:

"Maomao must help keep Consort Gyokuyou safe during her pregnancy. An imperial consort being with child is supposed to be a matter of the utmost secrecy, but this is the rear palace, where manoeuvring and backstabbing are as commonplace as banter and tea parties.

"Threats seem to lurk around every corner – but it's not just the rear palace keeping busy. Jinshi finds himself struggling to entertain a most unusual request from a pair of visiting ambassadors. Later, he's invited to an important gathering in a faraway place – but who knows what dangers might be waiting for him?"
