I wasn't going to write a recap for this week's episode of The Americans due to time commitments, but after watching it I couldn't not say a few short things about what happened.

While it was by some margin the worst episode of the season so far (another creepy paedo storyline? Come on!), it also packed such a hefty wodge of OMG moments into its tight 40-plus minute structure that I couldn't keep schtum.

I'll have to quickly skip over the bad - the children sub-plot, Elizabeth smashing up Gran (has this not weakened Margo Martindale's character too much?), why Vasili doesn't suspect Nina - and dive headfirst into the OMG-overload.

The Jennings deliberately strapping themselves in for a car crash, Phillip giving away Elizabeth's jewellery, Phillip getting kidnapped, Elizabeth kicking ass. The jaw-dropping moments just kept coming.

And as I've mentioned before in this blog, the twisting and always revolving Phillip/Elizabeth axis always manages to keep my eyes glued and my head hooked firmly in this show, even when, plot-wise, things veer towards the silly.

The twist of having Elizabeth and Phillip fake-kidnapped by the KGB was quite easy to spot coming (episode six was always going to be soon for the Americans to get their hands on them), but it was a clever plot device that increases tensions between the Jennings and simultaneously the Jennings and the KGB.

What to Read Next

The Americans' best trait is its ability to turn on a sixpence and revel in the lack of trust and faith we have in any of the characters. Even our heroes Phillip and Elizabeth could easily turn one way or the other at any moment and it would be utterly believable.

'Trust Me', as the episode title suggests, made incredible use of this trait. So much so, we can even forgive the silliness happening on the sidelines.
