Inside No. 9 co-creators Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton have announced that the show is going on "pause".

The duo, who write and star in the anthology horror series revolving around the number 9, have revealed to The Sun that the upcoming ninth series will be the last… for now.

"We feel it is a good time to pause Inside No. 9 after we finish filming series nine next year," Pemberton said.

While fans are likely to be disappointed about Inside No. 9 going on break, Pemberton pointed out he has form for revisiting his work after taking length breaks.

"We’re not saying it’s over for good," he mentioned.

“After all, The League Of Gentlemen came back, but we won’t be looking to make any more episodes for the time being.”

Indeed, Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton did reunite with Jeremy Dyson and Mark Gatiss some 15 years after concluding The League of Gentlemen for a reunion series in 2017.

Before Inside No. 9 goes on pause, it still has both an eighth and ninth series, plus a special airing during the festive season starring former Coronation Street actress Shobna Gulati and Doctor Who and The Witcher veteran Simon Callow.

This Christmas special features Dr. Jasper Parkway (Pemberton) being constantly interrupted during his stay in a haunted church by unexpected guests Pierce (Reece Shearsmith) and Posy (Shobna Gulati) as well as the property's warden warden Dick (Simon Callow).

"We discussed many, many different ways of presenting a Christmas special and the one we were really excited by was Christmas ghost stories," Pemberton said in a statement about the special.

Inside No. 9 will be airing its Christmas special on December 22 at 9pm on BBC Two and series eight will follow next year.
