Ranking of Kings spoilers follow.

Ranking of Kings season one was a masterpiece in modern anime writing. Across 23 episodes, it delivered a smart, subversive story about heroism that kept viewers guessing the whole time.

Ranking of Kings season two is yet to be confirmed, but fans were treated to a ten-episode anthology mini-series titled Treasure Chest of Courage which filled in some gaps from season one.

But that's not all – a surprise announcement made after the show's finale revealed a Ranking of Kings movie is in the works. Here’s everything we know so far.

Ranking of Kings movie release date: When does it come out?

Ranking of Kings surprised fans by announcing that a feature-length movie would be the next installment in the adventures of Bojji and Kage, rather than the much-anticipated second season.

After the finale of Treasure Chest of Courage aired, the show's official Twitter account shared the news:

Translated, the announcement simply reads: "A completely new movie is being produced – thank you for your continued support!".

Neither the movie's release date nor plot details have yet to be shared, but be sure to check back in with Digital Spy for future updates.

Ranking of Kings season 2 potential release date: When will it air?

Assuming we do get a proper second season, when can we expect everyone's favourite boy-king to return? The best way to estimate is to look at how long it took us to get the first set of episodes.

The first season of Ranking of Kings covered the manga's initial 12 volumes (collecting 156 chapters) – now referred to as 'Part 1'.

The first of these volumes was released back in February 2019, although creator Sōsuke Tōka started writing the series back in 2017, and the 12th volume came out in December 2021. This means it took at least three years for Tōka to write all the material covered in the first 23 episodes of the anime.

So, it seems fans will be waiting roughly two and a half years (from the season-one finale) until Bojji's been on enough adventures to justify a second season of the anime.

Now we know a Ranking of Kings movie is on the way it's harder to judge how much of the remaining manga will be adapted for that (if it's not an original story) and what would be left over for a potential second full season.

Ranking of Kings season 2 cast: Who's in it?

If the show does return for a second season, we'd expect to see all the friends Bojji met during his first outing. With that in mind, here are the Japanese and English voice actors for all of Ranking of Kings' principal players:

• Prince Bojji - Minami Hinata (Japanese) / Emily Fajardo (English)
• Kage - Ayumu Murase (Japanese) / SungWon Cho (English)
• Queen Hilling - Rina Satō (Japanese) / Luci Christian (English)
• Daida - Yûki Kaji (Japanese) / Justin Briner (English)
• Miranjo - Maaya Sakamoto (Japanese) / Brianna Roberts (English)
• Domas - Takuya Eguchi (Japanese) / A. J. Locascio (English)
• Dorshe - Hinata Tadokoro (Japanese) / Brent Mukai (English)
• Apeas - Hiroki Yasumoto (Japanese) / Luis Bermudez (English)
• Bebin - Yōji Ueda (Japanese) / Christopher Wehkamp (English)
• Despa - Takahiro Sakurai (Japanese) / Christopher R. Sabat (English)
• King Desha - Yoshimitsu Shimoyama (Japanese) / Gabe Kunda (English)
• King Bosse - Kenta Miyake (Japanese) / Cris George (English)

It's also worth noting that beyond its voice cast, Ranking of Kings season one was helmed by an all-star production team including chief director Makoto Fuchigami (Soul Eater), director Yousuke Hatta (Death Parade, One Punch Man) and assistant director Arifumi Imai (Attack On Titan). They should all be back to work on season two as well.

Was Ranking of Kings: Treasure Chest of Courage the same as season 2?

Ranking of Kings: Treasure Chest Of Courage was a series of largely unconnected episodes that took place between the events of the first season (think of it as season 1.5). The show consisted of ten episodes and aired between April 13 and June 15, 2023.

We'd recommend watching all ten if you're a fan of the show but, in a pinch, you should watch the final episode (more on that below) before the film and a potential second-season release.

Ranking of Kings season 2 plot: What will happen?

Ranking of Kings season one ended by wrapping up most of its major plot threads.

King Daida was given control over his body again. Bojji and the big four managed to defeat Ouken and Miranjo. And King Bosse finally died — for good this time — and floated off in a surprisingly graceful way. Oh, and in case you forgot, Daida proposed to Miranjo.

Ranking of Kings: Treasure Chest of Courage also moved several key storylines forward. Namely, it picked up the Ouken and Desha story, with the former being returned to his normal princely state (complete with an excellent 'tache).

During the final episode of Treasure Chest of Courage, we got some pretty major developments after King Desha entered the King's vault and claimed a treasure that allowed his brother’s curse to be lifted.

Unfortunately, this seems to have resulted in Desha disappearing, only to reappear with no memory of who he is. The episode also expanded the Ranking of Kings lore significantly by introducing one of the terrifying Gods glimpsed back in season one, which Ouken only narrowly manages to overcome.

We also got a deeper glimpse at the 'ranking' organisation and the shadowy figures who seem to be manipulating things behind the scenes. All of this and more suggest that the Ranking of Kings movie (and potential season two) will introduce us to a whole new cast of players.

Ranking of Kings season 2 trailer: When can I see it?

The first-ever trailer for Ranking of Kings season one came out roughly five months before the first episode aired, so expect a season-two trailer sometime around April 2024 if our estimate of a late 2024 release proves correct.

Either way, we'll update you right here when we know more.

Ranking of Kings season one and Treasure Chest of Courage are both available to watch on Crunchyroll.
