Line of Duty showrunner Jed Mercurio has some exciting news for fans of the BBC One crime drama, revealing series six may arrive sooner than expected.

With Mercurio previously taking time out to focus on another hit BBC show in Bodyguard, Line of Duty fans had to wait two years for the fifth series. But it seems there won't be any major holdups this time.

Asked by RadioTimes when series six will air, Mercurio said: "I would hope it's sometime in 2020, next year. But that's not something that we're able to confirm."

In regards to a production start-date, he said: "That's something that we have at the planning stage, so we are working towards a date. We can't confirm everything until things are in place."

The series five finale aired in March 2019, but viewers were left divided over a major twist in the closing scenes.

The entire fifth series built up the mystery surrounding the identity of 'H', a corrupt, high-ranking official pulling criminal strings from within the police force.

However, in the finale, not only did the identity of 'H' remain unrevealed, it also transpired that 'H' doesn't exist at all. Instead, there are four corrupt members of the force, three of which are either dead or imprisoned and one is still at large.

We guess you can still call the fourth one 'H' if it makes life easier for you.

Line of Duty airs on BBC One.
