BBC One's Dracula series – created by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat – is set to be accompanied by a documentary that will explore the history of Bram Stoker’s vampire count.

In Search of Dracula will follow Gatiss as he first travels to Orava Castle in Slovakia to begin his research.

Along with delving into Stroker's inspirations for the character, Gatiss will look at Dracula's journey from book to screen, discussing the various actors who have played him – from Bela Lugosi to Claes Bang, who stars in the BBC series.

Speaking to Radio Times, Gatiss said: “As a lifelong horror fan – and of Dracula especially – this was a wonderful chance to get back to the vampire’s roots, examine the strange character of Bram Stoker himself and immerse myself in the vast and joyous cinematic legacy of the Count.

“Dracula, to my delight, has once more risen from the grave!”

Previously, Moffat and Gatiss teased how Bram Stoker's creation will be "the hero of his own story" in their adaptation.

Moffat said: "There's lots of things that are challenging about Dracula. Having an evil lead character is actually really difficult.

"That's been the main challenge I think. But how we've handled, that you'll have to wait and see."

Gatiss added: "It's been very exciting though. Because we sort of made a promise to ourselves and the people who are making it, paying for it, that we'd make Dracula the hero of his own story, and less of a shadowy presence."

There's no exact premiere date for the series yet, but filming did wrap earlier this month.

Dracula will premiere on BBC One in the UK and on Netflix everywhere else.
