Sri Lanka will be one of the first countries to benefit from Google's balloon-based internet service Project Loon.
After several trials over the past two years, the company has chosen Sri Lanka for its first large-scale roll out.
"The entire Sri Lankan island - every village from (southern) Dondra to (northern) Point Pedro - will be covered with affordable high speed internet using Google Loon's balloon technology," said Sri Lanka's foreign minister and IT minister Mangala Samaraweera.
The country is an ideal start for Project Loon, given that Sri Lanka is relatively small.
It will also be a huge benefit to the country's 20 million population, given that only about 3-4 million actually have web access at the moment.
Last June the web giant invested further resources into the initiative, adding LTE capabilities to its latest floating hotspots to give them a greater transmission range than their WiFi-based predecessors.
