Back in late 2013, Google caused a bit of a stir by forcing YouTube users to join Google+ to upload videos or make comments.

It seems that the internet giant has come to its senses and realised grouping its services under one roof has not worked, as it has been announced that YouTube users will only need a Google account in the coming months.

"People have told us that accessing all of their Google stuff with one account makes life a whole lot easier," Google's VP of Streams, Photos and Sharing Bradley Horowitz explained in a blog post.

"But we've also heard that it doesn't make sense for your Google+ profile to be your identity in all the other Google products you use.

"So in the coming months, a Google Account will be all you'll need to share content, communicate with contacts, create a YouTube channel and more, all across Google."

Those who didn't want a Google+ profile in the first place will be given the option to separate their account and delete their Google+ profile soon.

YouTube won't be the only service to separate from Google+, as the company plans to carry on with its other products.

Writing further on his own Google+ profile, Horowitz admitted that joining YouTube with Google+ was a controversial decision.

"We decided it's time to fix this, not only in YouTube, but across a user's entire experience at Google. We want to formally retire the notion that a Google+ membership is required for anything at Google… other than using Google+ itself," he said.
